Altstätten is a small, historic rural town in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley, Switzerland, with a rich history, a beautifully preserved old town, and a location that offers access to the mountains and a range of cultural and natural attractions.
History and Description
Location: Situated in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley, close to the Austrian border, and at the foot of the Alpstein massif and the Appenzell hills.
Early History: First mentioned in 853 as "Altsteti."
Economic Development: The town's prosperity was historically based on its markets and, most importantly, the textile trade starting from the 13th century. In the 18th century, merchants from Altstätten delivered textiles across Europe. Later, in the 19th century, wine-growing declined and was replaced by the more profitable embroidery industry, which was further boosted by the arrival of the railway.
Historic Centre: Altstätten boasts one of the most beautiful historical town centres in Eastern Switzerland, which is part of the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites.
Architecture: The old town is characterized by grand Baroque commercial buildings, picturesque painted houses, a long arcade on the north side of the Marktgasse, and the triangular-shaped Engelplatz.
Museum: The former merchant's palace "Zur Prestegg" houses the History Museum, which was founded in 1895 and exhibits items from the daily lives of the upper middle class.
Typical Foods
As a town in the St. Gallen canton of Eastern Switzerland, Altstätten shares many of the region's culinary traditions, including popular Swiss dishes:
St. Galler Bratwurst: A famous regional sausage made of pork and veal. Locals typically enjoy this grilled sausage without mustard.
Biberli/Birnenzelten: A brown cake or biscuit filled with almond paste, which is a common specialty in the St. Gallen and Appenzell regions.
Cheese Dishes: Like elsewhere in Switzerland, local restaurants will serve classic dishes such as:
Fondue (a communal pot of melted cheese).
Raclette (melted cheese scraped onto potatoes, gherkins, and pickled onions).
Rösti: A classic Swiss potato dish, often served as a side.
Activities and Nature
Altstätten's location offers a wide array of activities, particularly for nature lovers, given its proximity to the Alps and the Rhine Valley.
Shops: The town center, especially along the historical streets like Marktgasse and Obergasse, offers a range of local shops, including those with historical arcade architecture, providing a pleasant shopping experience. The town is known for having numerous shopping opportunities.
Markets: Altstätten maintains a strong tradition of large markets, with the biggest often taking place in August.
Major Festivals:
Carnival (Fasnacht): Altstätten is famous for its long and upscale Shrove-Tuesday tradition (Carnival), which is popular throughout Switzerland. The "Röllelibutzen-club" holds performances, and a highlight is the international parade.
Genuss & Foodtruck Festival Rheintal: A multi-day festival focused on good food, live music, and conviviality.
Federal Folk Music Festival (EVMF): Altstätten hosted this large-scale festival celebrating the diversity of Swiss folk music and traditional culture (next planned for 2027), which includes concerts, competitions, markets, and a focus on wine.
